Find a Lawyer in the Delaware Valley
Do you need a lawyer in Philadelphia, PA; or in Wilmington, DE; or in Camden, NJ; or
anywhere in the Delaware Valley region? You've come to the right place. The right
place to start, at least.
Most people look for a lawyer somewhere near where they live or work.
Proximity certainly has advantages. Most people want to visit their lawyer and talk
face-to-face. But, there are other important reasons to look for someone in your area.
You will probably need an attorney who is licensed to practice in your state. Attorneys
can be, and often are, licensed to practice in multiple states. But, starting your search
near home is usually best.
Laws differ greatly from one state to another. In most cases, you'll need someone
who is expert in the laws of your state, and licensed to practice there.
But, if you know that the laws of another state will factor into
your legal needs, by all means, look for an attorney in that state. However, even in that
situation, you might choose to search locally first, then ask your neighborhood lawyer
for a referral to someone in the relevant jurisdiction.
There are many ways to find lawyers in your area. Here are a few websites you might find useful:
- FindLaw
Perhaps the slickest, best-looking of the major lawyer directories.
FindLaw provides small, thumbnail images of each law firm website in the
search results. You can browse or search by region or specialty (although
lawyers don't actually use the word "specialty" unless they've
earned specific credentials that entitle them to that status).
- Cornell University Law School - Lawyer Directory
Part of Cornell Law's Legal Information Institute. The directory covers the entire
nation. The site is a partnership with Justia.com, which provides free listings to every
lawyer in the United States. The LII directory is a subset of the Justia directory,
with different search features.
- Yodle Local
Very easy to use. Nice presentation, including small, thumbnail images of
some of the lawyers' websites in the search results.
- Martindale.com - by LexisNexis
Martindale claims to be the "Premier Destination for Sophisticated Buyers of Legal Services."
The site is very comprehensive and provides many ways to focus your search.
You can search or browse by geography or practice area (the area of the law).
- NOLO.com Lawyers Directory
Nolo has been providing free and low-cost legal information to consumers for quite
a while, including legal forms and documents that individuals can download from
their website. They also provide a good directory of lawyers, which you can
search by keyword or browse by location and practice area. Lawyers pay a fee to be
included in this directory.
- Justia.com
Justia.com which provides free listings to every lawyer in the United States.
That means the site may have the most complete, extensive database of law firms
in the country.
